According to the American Lung Association, indoor air quality can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Products and building materials within an interior space are contributors since they can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulates, and other pollutants. The smell you detect in a newly carpeted room is a typical example of VOC exposure.

In the last 20 years this has given rise to organizations and standards promoting healthy indoor air quality. One of them is UL GREENGUARD, a certification program owned by UL Solutions. GREENGUARD Certification is a testing protocol to identify products used in homes, classrooms, and offices that meet healthy air quality standards. 3D printers are no exception since they can be used in these spaces, and their emission criteria are governed by standard UL 2904 for a specific printer-material combination.

Recently, Stratasys F-Series printers – F170, F190CR, and F370 – received GREENGUARD Certification per UL 2904 when printing with ABS and ASA model materials and QSR Support. This applies to new printers and is designated by specific part numbers. In achieving this certification, these printers have met some of the most rigorous third-party chemical emissions standards. On a practical level, this means these printers require no additional ventilation to ensure safe indoor air quality.

Contact a Stratasys representative to learn more about F-Series printers and how you can safely employ additive manufacturing in your classroom or office. For information about UL 2904 and GREENGUARD Certification, visit the UL Solutions website.
